There are so many things I love about Canada, except for the toll the winter months take on my skin! I’m lucky enough to live further south than most, but my skin still suffers from the effect of the cold! This is why I’ve come up with a more intense winter skin-care routine than my regular one. I’m so excited to share my winter routine with all of you!
A Little Background
My skin has always been a combination of oily and normal skin 90% of the time. Surprisingly, in the winter it has the ability to switch from oily and normal to bone dry almost over night. My winter skin-care routine is centred around introducing and maintaining moisture.
I will admit that my focus shifts and I’m not as interested in preventing acne and minimizing blackheads as I normally am, but this is because the products I use to achieve those results often dry my skin.

I’m super passionate about skin care and getting the chance to dive back into the beauty world! A little background: I used to be obsessed with makeup and skincare products, and was always trying out new looks. Unfortunately during nursing school I lacked time and the budget to continue to pursue this passion. Since graduating I have more time to pursue this passion, and the continue to strive for a balance of budget beauty and splurges. Okay, without further adiue, let’s dive into my winter skin care routine!
Girl, Wash Your Face!
Washing your face is so important (I’m sure you know this by now!). I stick to washing twice a day, and I’m always looking for a new cleanser to try. For the winter months I tend to stay away from products that clear acne as they tend to dry my skin out. I look for products that are safe to use every-day, are moisturizing and are gentle.
My current obsession is Boscia Everyday Gel-to-Mousse Cleanser (below)! It’s soft and gentle on my skin. I love that it goes from a gel to a mousse and feels absolutely weightless. I am currently using this morning and night! It hydrates my skin and is gentle enough when my skin does have bouts of sensitivity and dryness!
Exfoliators: I used to be a huge fan of physical exfoliators (ie. scrubs with little pieces in them, sugar scrubs, etc.) however recently through research I have been learning they may not be the best for your skin, and it is better to use chemical exfoliators. I am continuing to research this and will update you guys when I know more! As of right now I am not using one.
Splurge: I have had my Clarisonic for a couple years now and I can’t recommend them enough. I use it everywhere from once a day to once every two days (usually in the winter) and consistently see results. From using my Clarisonic I notice that my pores are smaller, and I have less breakouts. My Clarisonic is essential to how my skin feels like it was deeply cleaned. (If you click my special link here and sign up for Clarisonic’s newsletter, you can get 10% off you next purchase!)
I like to use mine at the end of the day to double check and make sure I get all of my a makeup off! I use the Cashmere brush head because they’re so soft and gentle!
Moisturize Moisturize Moisturize!
Of course the meat and potatoes of my winter skin-care routine should be about moisturizing! Hydration is so important for my skin in the winter, I had to bring out the heavy guns for this!
It’s taken a lot of trial and error to find the products that actually moisturized my skin and left my face feeling soft and supple. I’ll walk you through my morning, night and weekly routine! See below what products I use and when!
Morning: I use GLAMGLOW Waterburst to lock in moisture right after I wash my face in the morning! Their Waterburst Moisturizer absorbs quickly and doesn’t interfere with my makeup application. It smells great, hydrates all day long and leaves my skin feeling soft! This moisturizer is lightweight, non-greasy and leaves my skin feeling like a fresh canvas. A little bit of a beauty splurge but worth every penny!
Night: I use First Aid Beauty Ultra Repair Cream. Hands down the best moisturizing product I’ve owned to date. This really locks it down and seals in the moisture in my skin! I wake up and my skin feels soft, hydrated and ready for the day. This is my number one product to fight off the winter flakies and keep my skin supple. Could not go without this! They are absolutely right about the fact that it is for intense hydration! This moisturizer is thick, rich and affordable considering the heavy-duty work it does!
Weekly: I use Glow Recipe Watermelon Glow Sleeping Mask 1-2x per week depending on how dry my skin is. I have used this in combination with F.A.B. Ultra Repair Cream, or on it’s own and the results are fantastic. When I wake up, my skin is SO hydrated after using this.
My face is more radiant and absolutely hydrated to the max after using. The application is a little tricky because of the texture/little spoon that comes with it (careful, it can slip right off the end!) But I love it regardless! This sleeping mask is silky and smooth and an absolute decadent splurge for my skin care needs!
Can’t Forget About LIPS
My lips have always suffered from being dry and cracked at this time of year. NOT THIS YEAR! My friend recommended to me to try La Neige’s Lip Sleeping Mask (I also totally use this all day long, it smells SO yummy!) to hydrate my lips! My lips are no longer chapped and are actually soft and hydrated this winter! This stuff never leaves my side!
Other Little Helpers
Face wash and moisturizers make up the bulk of my winter skin-care routine, but there are a few supporting products that I use when I can, but perhaps not every day. These products I love as well, but may not require everyday use (such as a mask), but they’re definitely worth mentioning! You’ll find these products below!
First Aid Beauty Ultra Repair Instant Oatmeal Mask: My go to when I need a hydration pick me up/my flakies get out of hand! This mask you can throw on and watch it transform your skin! My skin feels so soft and hydrated after using this! If I’m experiencing a bad bout of flakies I’ll just slap it on and head to bed! Gentle, nourishing and so worth it! I also love to include this as part of a pamper day/self-care activity. (Check out more here)
Mario Badescu Facial Spray (Lavender): If you’re anything like me and obsessed with Lavender, you will love love love this spray! This hydrating facial spray can be put on when you get out of the shower, after applying moisturizer or plain old right before bed (the lavender will help with sleep as well!). I spritz this on usually right after I get out of the shower and right before bed. So decadent!
Other Important Considerations
While there are several products out there to help introduce and maintain skin hydration, skin care often starts from within. Here are some important reminders to keep your skin happy and healthy this winter:
1. Drink lots of water – harder to remember in the winter but still equally as important.
2. Eat lots of fruit and vegetables – full of water, nutrients, vitamins and minerals!
3. Get ample sleep – for anything good to happen in our bodies, we need to make sure we are getting enough sleep! Skin included!
4. Be wary of water temperature – hot hot water can dry skin out faster! Make sure the water is warm but not scalding!
5. If you have a persistent problem with any skin care issue, seek medical assistance such as seeing a dermatologist – if something isn’t working in your routine and you aren’t getting results, seek help from a dermatologist! This is their field and they may be able to help with tough, recurring skin issues!
I hope you all enjoyed my winter skin-care routine! I am not offering dermatological advice, just sharing what I use to beat dry winter skin. For any skin concerns I recommend seeing a dermatologist!
