No one expects anyone coming fresh out of the blogging gates to be running at 100% their first hour of debut. It took me a month to figure out my blog when I first started, and then another month once I switched from free WordPress to self-hosted! This not even taking account the time I put into my social media platforms! So, if anyone knows the struggle of feeling like you stick out like a sore thumb in the blogging world, I’m your girl.
Are you looking to get your blog started, or you’ve already started the blog part but aren’t sure how to set up your Pinterest properly? Hold Up, Why Pinterest?
One of the many ways bloggers can drive traffic to their blog is through social media, as well as Pinterest. Pinterest can be a blogger’s holy grail of traffic source, if you set it up properly. Many bloggers out there will tell you their number one source of traffic results from Pinterest!
How you may ask? Bloggers can create pins that contain links to their blog posts. When people click on these pins, it takes them to your blog, and they can read your post, or look around a page if that’s where you’ve linked it!
Essentially, the pins act as a direct link to your blog, and as long as your pin is being re-pinned over and over, the chances of widening your audience grow with each re-pin! Cool right?

Back to the Basics
For now, I’ll just stick to telling you the basics to set up your Pinterest properly. I’m a firm believer in the fact that you need to learn to walk before you can run, and this is no different. Before you start attracting traffic to your Pinterest account, you may want to clean it up a bit so that when people stumble upon your account, they like what they see!
These 10 quick fixes are designed to spruce up your Pinterest account to make it look more professional before you start becoming a Pinterest Guru. Setting everything up is half the battle and if you can get through that, then you really can do anything!

10 Quick Fixes to Make Your Pinterest Look More Professional
1. Pinterest Name
What is your name on Pinterest? Does it accurately reflect your blog or is it a personal account you’ve already been using? I personally started from scratch and made a Cynspo Pinterest account. This is so my account was uniform to my other social media platforms and blog.
When you use the same name uniformly across all platforms, people are able to easily find you, and you appear more consistent. When people search for Cynspo on any platform, you can find me!
My recommendation is to make sure your Pinterest name reflects your blog, as well as the name you use on other platforms to create your own brand. I recommend doing this even before you purchase a domain name, so that your domain name accurately reflects your name across all platforms! (If you still need a domain name, my personal recommendation is to check out NameCheap!).

2. Type of Pinterest Account
When using your Pinterest for your blog, it’s recommended you switch to a business account. Not only does it come off more professional, but you also gain access to valuable analytics. These analytics are super helpful when it comes to determining how your Pinterest account is growing. It’s also super helpful when determining your Pin’s reach!
To set up a Pinterest business account, go to settings > account settings > there’s an option to be either a business account or personal (or you can switch from personal to business). You can always switch back later if you don’t like the Pinterest business account, but the analytics alone are a valuable tool to determine growth.
3. Claim Your Website (Yay!)
You’ve most likely put in all your love, effort, blood, sweat and tears to get your blog up and running! Show it off! This is also how you get the analytics from your site in addition to your own Pinterest profile analytics. To do this, you must set it up under settings > claim > enter your domain name. Pinterest may take some time to approve your website, but once you’ve claimed it, it’s yours!
You can claim your website whether you’re self-hosted or not, but I always recommend being self-hosted! If you aren’t self hosted, self-hosted simply means you choose to host your blog through a hosting website (I use SiteGround and LOVE them). This means that you have complete control over how to monetize your blog, as well as complete customization over your blog and site! (Plus you can download Plugins with a self-hosted WordPress to make it even easier)
If you aren’t self-hosted yet, I recommend checking out SiteGround. They offer great prices, excellent support (they switched everything over from my free WordPress account to my new site!) and timely responses. Every time I get on live chat with them they resolve my issues super quick, and have always been super friendly to talk to! (You can get hosting prices starting as low as $3.95 per month by clicking here!)
4. Your Pinterest Profile Picture
Personally, I went with a picture of my face because it’s known that people are more likely to relate with a picture of your face. If you aren’t comfortable doing this, I recommend at least posting your blog’s logo, or a design that is clearly the same across all platforms!
Take a quick look at my Pinterest to be able to see what I’m referring to:

5. Having a Few Followers
While the number of followers isn’t directly related to success on Pinterest, having more followers than not will boost people’s confidence in you that you are a trusted Pinner and blogger! There is no magic number, I would just recommend more than single digit numbers!
Here is where you can enlist the help from your family and friends, as well as participate in Pinterest follow threads to boost your followers in the beginning. Then, naturally, your number of followers will come! Bonus is that the follow/unfollow game doesn’t seem to be as active on Pinterest, so people will likely follow you and stay following you!
6. Monthly Viewers
Now, this is mostly an aesthetic number. It doesn’t have too much of an impact on the number of people who actually visit your blog. However, it can be an indication of how active you are on Pinterest. As long as you pin a few times a day, the number will be greater than 0 (yay!). That’s all I would really worry about. As long as you’re sitting at more than 0, you will look more professional.
Again, like followers, this is not an indication of success and increased blog traffic. However, having more than 0 in both of those numbers makes people believe you’re actually active on Pinterest.
7. Consistent Board Covers
Having board covers is an excellent way to tie your Pinterest together. The bonus is that you can use the colours in your blog theme to tie together your Pinterest account and your blog! This will make you look more consistent across your social media platforms, and keep your branding the same!
Personally, I use Canva to create all of my Pinterest and blogging graphics! It’s free and super easy to use! I created the board covers you see on my Pinterest account and simply used the same template I created for all of my boards!

Pro-Tip: In Canva you can actually choose the colour code for whichever colour your blog theme is (pictured below). You simply enter the 6-digit colour and letter combination to get the exact colour of your theme! (I purchased my theme from Creative Market and it came with a document telling me all the colour codes for my theme!) This is how I’m able to keep both my blog and Pinterest uniform!

To upload a board cover simply create the board cover, upload as a Pin, and pin it to the designated board. You can then edit the board to change the cover!
8. Create Boards Related to Your Niche
In addition to having uniform board covers, it’s important to have boards that are related to your niche! Now this doesn’t mean if you’re a fashion blogger you only need to have fashion boards, but maybe throwing in a ‘children’s birthday party ideas’ board may not be the best strategy.
It’s okay to have boards that don’t 100% directly relate to your niche, but I wouldn’t go too far outside the boarders of that niche (simply to keep it uniform). That being said, it’s also okay to have more than one niche! (Bonus – you can add more boards related to your niche if you have more than one niche!)
9. How You Organize Your Boards
It seems like I’m really stressing out about boards, but hear me out. The boards are essentially the home of where your Pins will be. For example, if your Pinterest account was set up in a room, and if a Pinterest account states it specializes in Pinterest, wouldn’t you want the first board you see to be about Pinterest? Wouldn’t you be confused if the first board you saw was Home Decor DIY?
While I said it’s okay to have a few boards that don’t really relate to your exact niche, but still do by a stretch, it’s important to organize them appropriately. Front and centre should be boards directly related to your blog, and then by order of importance boards related to your niche.
I personally stick boards that aren’t super related to my niche, but still sort of are, near the bottom. Why? Because I wouldn’t want to wade through 101 best meatball recipes when I’m looking for something related to email marketing. Make your Pinterest even more cohesive (and make sense) by putting the super relevant boards at the top!
Pro-tip: I also move all my group boards down to the bottom of the list. Not because I’m ashamed (I’m very grateful to be a part of group boards) but those are boards I cannot change the cover on because I’m not the creator of. This meaning they have a different board cover than my board covers. To increase cohesion and unity, I stick them at the bottom to allow all my boards with the same cover together!
10. Pinning High-Quality Pins
Okay, I know it was a long list, but hear me out just a little bit longer! Last, but certainly not least, pay attention to the pins you re-pin (and create). If you want your Pinterest to have that slight aesthetic edge, make sure you’re re-pinning high quality pins. What do I mean by that? I mean take a few extra seconds and really look at the pins you’re re-pinning.
Avoid pins with blurry pictures, spelling-mistakes, grammar mistakes or crooked graphics. Although these aren’t huge deals, they will absolutely stand out from more carefully made pins. I personally don’t re-pin pins with these visible types of flaws, because the quality isn’t there. I only want to re-pin pins that I would actually click on myself, and I definitely don’t click on pins with visible flaws.
Note: I’m not trying to be rude or insensitive, but this is a personal practice. I’m guilty of it and others have made errors when typing up blog posts. A few errors I don’t really notice. It’s when I see errors left, right and centre, as well as an error on the pin cover, that I don’t really put any more trust into that post. The pin cover is like the book cover to your blog post, and I personally wouldn’t pick up a book that had a spelling error on the cover. Think of your Pin cover as possibly your only chance to make an impression on your blog!

Great post. Thank you for the tip about reordering your Pinterest boards. I had no idea this was possible and can’t wait to move some stuff around. I have created a couple of new boards that are a little outside of the niche. I’m happy you addressed that in your post too. It felt right but I wasn’t sure so it’s cool to have another opinion. Thanks for sharing!
